Use a free pattern to turn your too big t-shirt into this boxy sleeveless t-shirt.
Hey y’all, today I’m going to share how to sew this boxy sleeveless t-shirt using a free pattern. Would you believe this top is the same pattern I used to sew this hoodie?
It is! One of the reasons I love that hoodie pattern is that it’s so easy to modify into different looks. Below is the oversized and twisted t-shirt I started with.
I used the front and back pieces to make this top and added armbands and a neckband. Check out the video below or on YouTube here to see what I did. There’s also a list below the video of the pattern modifications I made.
Here are the pattern modifications I made to the hoodie pattern:
- Take 3 inches off the hem
- Bring the shoulder in toward center front/center back 3/4 inch
- Bring the shoulder point up 1 inch
- Bring the armscye up 2 3/4 inches
- Redraw the armscye curve
- Repeat steps 3-5 on the back piece
- Drop the neckline 1 3/4 inches on the front and redraw the curve
- Cut 2 armbands 2 1/2 inches wide by 14 3/4 inches long
- Cut a neckband 17 1/2 inches long by 2 inches wide
Follow the directions in the hoodie tutorial to sew up the shoulder and side seams, then mark quarter points on the neckline and armscyes. Sew the armbands and neckband into loops, then fold them and mark quarter points. Match quarter points to quarter points and sew the bands to the shirt. Then fold a 3/4 inch hem on the bottom and sew it and you’re done!
