Lesson 1—Supplies, Cutting & Embroidery

10

Welcome to our free Child’s Faux Leather Crossbody Bag Sew-Along, presented by SINGER®! Over the next four weeks, you will learn how to make a cute crossbody bag for autumn—and some bonus projects as well! The crossbody bag was designed by Alicia Welcher, assistant editor of Classic Sewing magazine, and the videos are presented by Soni Grint, director of education for SINGER® and HUSQVARNA® VIKING® in North America.

This first lesson covers the supplies, cutting and embroidery. The lessons will explore the SINGER® MOMENTO™ cutting machine and how you can use this as another tool in your sewing room—as well as in many other crafting endeavors! While you do not have to use a cutting machine to participate in the sew-along, several of its features make these projects fast and easy. Be sure to enter the giveaway for your chance to win your own SINGER® MOMENTO™ (valued at $849.99). Visit our sew-along homepage to enter. The lessons also feature the HUSQVARNA® VIKING® DESIGNER EPIC 3 sewing and embroidery machine.

  • One 9” x 24” piece of Shape-Flex fusible interfacing
  • One 7” x 5-1/2” piece of waste (scrap) fabric
  • 7” of piping cord (3/16” – 1/4” wide)
  • Two Small Swivel Hook and D-Ring sets (1/2”)
  • One magnetic snap set
  • Polyester construction thread to match or blend with faux leather
  • Water-soluble thread
  • Piping trimming ruler

  • Point turner
  • Wonder clips
  • Precision Tweezers
  • Piping, Welting or Zipper foot

For Embroidery

  • 4×4 or larger embroidery hoop
  • Sticky tear-away stabilizer, enough to fit hoop
  • 40wt. embroidery thread in your choice of color
  • Size 75 embroidery needle

Cutting

  • Different files are supplied for bags worn on the left or right hip.
  • Use only the files designated for your chosen side.
  • Starch lining fabric before cutting.
  1. Cut Leather Left or Leather Right from the faux leather (right side up) using the Extra Heavy Fabric setting and the Rotary Blade.
  2. If using a 12” x 24” mat, cut Lining Cutting Part 1 Left or Right 12×24 AND Lining Cutting Part 2 12×24 from the lining fabric (right side up) using the Quilting Fabric setting and the Rotary Blade.

OR

If using a 24” x 24” mat, cut Lining Cutting Left or Right 24×24 from the lining fabric (right side up) using the Quilting Fabric setting and the Rotary Blade.

  1. Cut Interfacing from the fusible interfacing (glue side up) using the Quilting Fabric setting and the Rotary Blade.

Embroidery

  1. Mark the center of the embroidery 2-1/2” up from lower edge and 2” in from long straight side of faux leather pocket. It does not matter what type of pen you use to mark as long as it will not show through the applique fabric.
  2. Hoop sticky tear-away stabilizer. Score and remove the paper from the inner hoop to expose the sticky surface.
  3. Embroider the design as follows:

Color 1: Placement Lines, glue cut-out leaves in place RSU (do not spot glue, glue entire leaf down).

Color 2: Satin Stitching

4. Remove pocket and stabilizer from hoop and carefully tear away the excess stabilizer (photo 1).
