Welcome back to our free SINGER® MOMENTO™ Sew-Along and Giveaway, presented by our friends at SINGER®! In this thee-part series, you will learn how to make a beautiful drawstring bag that features a quilt block personalized with embroidery. The project was designed by SINGER® educator Meredith McClanahan, who hosts the video lessons.
This second lesson covers the machine embroidery as well as assembling the front quilt block. We are sewing and embroidering on the SINGER® SE9180. The lessons also explore the SINGER® MOMENTO™ cutting machine and how you can use this as another tool in your sewing room—as well as in many other crafting endeavors! While you do not have to use a cutting machine to participate in the sew-along, several of its features make this a fast and easy project. Be sure to enter the giveaway for your chance to win your own SINGER® MOMENTO™ (valued at $849.99). Visit our sew-along homepage to enter.

- Load the embroidery design of your choosing. This monogram is from Classic Sewing magazine’s monogram set, Leaf and Petal, and can be purchased here.
- Embroider the monogram, changing colors when promoted.
- Remove the embroidered fabric and stabilizer from the embroidery hoop.
- Center the embroidery design and cut a 4-1/2″ square (photo 1).
Quilt Block Assembly
Set the machine for sewing. Insert a size 80 universal needle. Thread machine and wind bobbin with quilting thread.
Creating the Flying Geese
1. Take one of the eight yellow squares and one of the four pink rectangles and place them right sides together along the short edge (photo 2). Sew along the diagonal line on the yellow square drawn by MOMENTO™. Using a straight edge ruler and a rotary cutter, cut the excess fabric off 1/4″ away from the sew line (photo 3). Using your iron, press the yellow corner away from the pink rectangle (photo 4). Continue this process with all four pieces.
2. Once you have four yellow squares sewn to each pink rectangle, place one of the remaining four yellow squares on the opposite end of the pink rectangle. With the right sides together, sew on the diagonal sew lines, meeting the previous seam to make a point (photo 5). Take a straight edge ruler and a rotary cutter and cut the excess fabric off 1/4″ away from the sew line (photo 6). Using your iron, press the yellow corner piece away from the pink (photo 7). Now you will have four completed flying geese rectangles.
Completing the Front Square
1. With right sides together, sew a floral print square to each end of TWO flying geese rectangles. Press seams toward floral print. You’ll have two complete strips (photo 8, one strip shown).
2. Sew the remaining two flying geese rectangles to each side of the center embroidered square. Be mindful that the flying geese points are touching the embroidered square verses pointing away from the embroidered square (photo 9). Press the seams toward the white center embroidered block.
3. Add the two flying geese strips with corner pieces to the top and bottom of the center block. Again, being mindful of which side of the flying geese strip you sew to the center block piece, the point of the flying geese should be touching the embroidered center (photo 10). These seam allowances were pressed in opposite directions to eliminate bulk and allow the seams to “nest” against each other which helps with alignment (photo 11).
4. Once they are sewn together, twist the corner seams, like a pinwheel, so that all the seams fold in the correct direction and press (photo 12).
5. Sew the 1-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ green gingham strips, right sides together, along the top and bottom of the quilt block (photo 13). Press seams toward green gingham strips.
6. Repeat the process attaching the 1-1/2″ x 10-1/2” strips to each side, sewing them right sides together (photo 14). Press seams toward the green gingham strips.
Adding Top Pieces to Front and Back
1. Sew one 4-1/2″ x 10-1/2″ floral print rectangle, right sides together, to the TOP of the quilt block. Press seam toward the floral print. This completes the front piece.
2. Sew the second 4-1/2″ x 10-1/2″ floral print rectangle the top of the yellow 10-1/2″ square. Press seam toward yellow square.
That’s all for Lesson 2! Join us next week for Lesson 3, where we will construct the drawstring bag.
