Lesson 3—Notebook Cover: Embroidery, Part 2 & Embellishment

10

Welcome back to our Autumn Embroidery Sew-Along, sponsored by our friends at Janome! We are so happy that you have joined us! During this sew-along, we’re creating two in-the-hoop projects: a notebook cover and a matching pencil case. In this third lesson, we’ll create the embroidery embellishment and finish the in-the-hoop embroidery for the notebook cover. The instructions will feature the Janome Continental M17 sewing and embroidery machine. Plus, you also have the chance to win a Janome Travel Mate 16! Visit our sew-along homepage to learn more about these two machines and enter the giveaway.

Embroidery Embellishment

Because I was trying to use the polka dot fabric as a design element along with the embroidery designs, I only wanted smaller designs. You can find these smaller designs in two different locations in the Continental M17 sewing and embroidery machine.

Location 1: Under the Lettering Tab

There are two categories under the lettering tab where small designs reside – Border and Normal Sew. On the front of my notebook cover, I used the cat found on page 2 of Normal Sew.

Location 2: Under the Designs by Hoop Size Tab

Select the SQ10d hoop to see only designs that will fit inside that hoop. The SQ10d hoop is a 4×4” (100x100mm) hoop. From this menu, I used two spirograph-type designs on the back of my notebook cover and a small snowflake design on the front.

Notes:

  1. Directions for finding, editing and stitching these designs is covered in detail in the video that accompanies these instructions.
  2. When using directional designs, remember to rotate them to the same orientation as the notebook cover.

In-the-Hoop Embroidery, Part 2

  1. Carefully tear away the excess tear-away stabilizer that was floated under the hoop for the monogram and other embroidery embellishment. DO NOT remove the cover from the hoop to do this!
  2. Load the design, Notebook Cover Part 2, to your Continental M17 sewing and embroidery machine.
  3. Place the sleeves onto the front cover in the hoop, right side of sleeves to right side of front, aligning the raw edges of the fabrics on the outside.
  4. Center the lining on top of the sleeves/front, wrong side up, with the finished edges of the lining at the top and bottom. The unfinished edges will line up with the raw edges of the front and sleeves on the sides.
  5. Stitch Color 1. This will stitch a rectangle around the outside, just inside the rectangle stitched at the end of Part 1.
  6. Stitch Color 2. This will stitch a zigzag around the outside of the rectangle, finishing the raw edges of your notebook cover.
  7. Remove the notebook cover from the hoop. Trim the cover and cutaway stabilizer just outside the zigzag stitching.
  8. Turn the cover right side out and insert the front and back covers of the composition notebook into the sleeves.

Join us next week where we will create a matching zippered pencil case – also in-the-hoop!
