Start sewing with confidence

Follow these steps in order. You do not need expensive equipment or advanced skills to begin.

Learn the power switch, presser foot, bobbin, stitch selector, handwheel and reverse control.

Fabric scissors, pins or clips, tape measure, seam ripper, needles, thread and an iron.

Use spare cotton to practise speed control, corners and backstitching.

Learn grainlines, notches, seam allowance and simple pattern instructions.

A tote bag, cushion cover or drawstring bag is a realistic first finish.

Unpicking is part of sewing. Check the basics and use the Fix Wizard when needed.
